The Creation by E.O. WilsonThe Creation: An Appeal to Save Life on Earth by the renowned Harvard University biologist E.O. Wilson is in the form of a letter written to a Southern Baptist pastor. "With lyrical language that evokes his Alabama Southern Baptist boyhood and recollects many of his most memorable experiences as a biologist, Wilson explains why Earth's rich but imperiled bio-diversity is vitally important to humanity and why 'each species, however inconspicuous and humble it may seem to us at the moment, is a masterpiece of biology, and well worth saving'"(Book jacket).

Dance of the Dissident Daughter by Sue Monk Kidd
Dance of the Dissident Daughter by Sue Monk Kidd is described as "a fascinating, well-researched and well-written story, . . . an account of anger turned to courage, creativity and love." It recounts her "successful pilgrimage from her Southern Baptist roots and away from the patriarchal and fundamentalist Christian religious systems surrounding her" (Publisher's Weekly).

Speaking of Sin by Barbara Brown TaylorIn Speaking of Sin, Barbara Brown Taylor brings "fresh perspective to a cluster of words that often cause us discomfort and have widely fallen into neglect: sin, damnation, repentance, penance, and salvation. . . . Contrary to the prevailing view, Taylor calls sin 'a helpful, hopeful word' [that] enables us to move from 'guilt to grace'" (Book jacket).

The Spiral Staircase by Karen ArmstrongThe Spiral Staircase by Karen Armstrong is an inspiring memoir. It recounts Armstrong's "climb out of darkness" after she leaves convent life to pursue English literature at Oxford. After seven years in the convent, she found that "her deep solitude and a terrifying illness--diagnosed only years later as epilepsy--marked her forever as an outsider. . . . [This book] is "an extraordinary account of an astonishing spiritual journey" (Book jacket).

The New Brothers Grimm by David T. MorganThe New Brothers Grimm by retired University of Montevallo historian David T. Morgan "is a critical review of the very popular Left Behind series, plus one of the books in the Left Behind: The Kids series, and the first book in a new series called Babylon Rising. Tim LaHaye is co-author with Jerry B. Jenkins of the first two series and with Greg Dinallo of the third series. All three series presume that a theological system called pre-millennial dispensationalism is the correct interpretation of the Bible, which the serieses’ authors are sure is the infallible word of God, having no errors of any kind—theological or otherwise" (publisher).

Why I Am A Catholic by Garry WillsIn Why I Am A Catholic by Garry Wills, "one of our country's most noted writers and historians, offers a powerful statement of his Catholic faith. Beginning with a reflection on his early experience of that faith as a child and later as a Jesuit seminarian, Wills reveals the importance of Catholicism in his own life. He goes on to challenge, in clear and forceful terms, the claim that criticism or reform of the papacy is an assault on the faith itself. For Wills, a Catholic can be both loyal and critical, a loving child who stays with his father even if the parent is wrong"(book jacket).

Darwin's Black Box by Michael J. Behe "In 1996, Darwin's Black Box by Michael J. Behe helped to launch the intelligent design movement: the argument that nature exhibits evidence of design, beyond Darwinian randomness. It sparked a national debate on evolution, which continues to intensify across the country. . . . Darwin's Black Box has established itself as the key intelligent design text — the one argument that must be addressed in order to determine whether Darwinian evolution is sufficient to explain life as we know it" (from the publisher).

November 4, 2007

Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid by Jimmy CarterIn Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid, "President Carter shares his intimate knowledge of the history of the Middle East and his personal experiences with the principal actors, and he addresses sensitive political issues many American officials avoid. Pulling no punches, Carter prescribes steps that must be taken for the two states to share the Holy Land without a system of apartheid or the constant fear of terrorism" (from the publisher).
